Locating in the south of the river Sutlej and being a part of the Cholistan, Bahawalpur is famous for its historical monuments of the Abbasid dynasty. It was founded in 1748 by the Abbasid caliph Muhammad Bahawal Khan. The Abbasi dynasty ruled over this area for more than 200 years. The last Abbasid was Nawab Sir Sadiq Muhammad Khan Abbasi V who joined Pakistan in 1947.These days Bahawalpur is the divisional headquarters and district of Punjab province.

The great Abbasis are on eternal rest in the graveyard which is a few hundred yards away from the Fort Derawar. The grand celebrities of the past lying in this graveyard are:
