More than a few human beings plays a fundamental role in the progress and development of a city or a country and we have an example of men of honors, who graduated in the field of Medical and choose it as their profession known as Dr. Zahid Baqai and Dr.F.U. Baqai, were passionate for the welfare of human. They socially served the citizens of Nazimabad in the late sixties by setting up a private hospital complex. In next to no time, this hospital complex was urbanized into a 350-bedded all-purpose hospital and ensures the contemporary refined healing for the middle-income group of private patients. The hospital was supported by many charitable organizations. This noble act performed by them proved to be victorious and in no time the hospital became a centre of brilliance. This sensational achievement motivated Baqai’s to chase their up coming challenges in this imperative field of edification and fitness.
They planned to serve almost 70%of urban population of Pakistan as their health issues were seriously ignored by the health planner located in the urban area. At this stage they come up with a conclusion to grant health services to the rural area of Karachi and then in no time they founded the Baqai Medical Complex on the Super Highway in 1976. More over they introduced a Rural Health Care Centre that accomplishes the requirements of the area. Then further to enhance their productivity they started building Medical College in early 80’s. After its infrastructure was completed they started focusing to heir highly experienced and qualified professionals and affiliation with the Karachi University was also attained.
In 1988, Baqai Medical College started its admission of students for the first batch. In 1990, the Departments of basic medical sciences were granted recognition by the Pakistan Medical and Dental Council and the college got the authorization to start clinical teaching at Baqai Hospital, Nazimabad. Before long, Baqai Dental College was established by the Baqai Foundation in 1992 and was the foremost Dental College to be setup at Karachi to accommodate the requirements of over 10 million populations. The Inspection Teams of P.M.D.C regularly scrutinize the Dental and Medical College.
In 1993, the first batches of Medical and Dental students were awarded Degrees of M.B.B.S and in 1997, B.D.S degrees by the University of Karachi. Undeniably, this was the most achieving moment not only for students or their parents but also for the Baqai Foundation. The Baqai Foundation has started many postgraduate programmes such as Baqai Institute of Obstetrics, Baqai Institute of Surgical Sciences, Baqai Institute of Development and Reproduction Sciences (BIRDS) and Institute of Ophthalmology. The department of Hematology was upgraded to the programmes of M.Sc and Diploma in hematology. The Government of Sindh propagates an ordinance, by establishing Baqai Medical University in October 1993, but the project was completed in 8th of April 1996. A new leaf was turned in October 1993 and they established the Baqai Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences for education in Pharmacy leading to the degrees of PhD, M.Phil and B. Pharmacy.
