The War of Independence 1857 left the Muslims of Indian in a wretched sate as the British put the sole responsibility of the War on their shoulders and started avenging and revenging them. They were proscribed from their basic rights of employments and education along with other social and cultural freedoms. In such conditions Sir Syed Ahmad Khan stepped forward to brush off the image of the Muslims.

The Muslim politicians and intellectuals founded Anjuman-e-Himayat-e Islam on September 24, 1884 in Lahore with the purpose of spreading political, social, and religious awareness among the Muslims of India. Anjuman, also serving as a philanthropic organization along with educational institutions, deserves great homage as it provided remarkable services to defend the Muslims against the religious and cultural onslaughts of Hindus.

The history of Indo-Pak is furnished with the persons who thought and worked for the cause of the down trodden Muslims of India. The Muslims under the British Empire were living a dejected life after the unsuccessful War of Independence against the British which brought chastisements on them especially in the key areas of life i.e. education, employment, finance and trade. They were doomed to be the Koolies, messengers and Cowkidars according to William Hunter, the person who researched the reasons of Muslims’ unrest in India.

Nadva-tul-Ulama of Lucknow was established in 1894 by some government officials with the religious tilt and Maulanas who wanted the heyday of the past back. They also aimed at the unity of the Mulims od India and revival of the Syllabi which had been taught in Islamic Madrassas in the bygone days. The very first session of Nadva-tul-Ulema was held in Kanpur in 1893 and Maulana Ltfullah Sahib presided over the meeting.
