Mohsin Naqvi was an Urdu poet of Pakistan. He is considered one of the great Urdu poets. Mohsin Naqvi was born in village named as Mohalla-e-Sadat near Dera Ghazi Khan in province Punjab, Pakistan on 5 May 1947. The name given him by his parents was Ghulam Abbas that he himself later changed as Ghulam Abbas Mohsin Naqvi and now he is known as Mohsin Naqvi. He was a Shia Muslim. Name of his father was Syed Chirag Hussain and he was a saddle maker but later he worked as a food dealer. He had six siblings.
He was an intelligent student. He did graduation from Government College Bosan Road, Multan. After completing his graduation, he came to Lahore and he received his master’s degree in Urdu from University of the Punjab. He was keenly interested in Urdu poetry and used to read the poetry of the great Urdu poets. In his one interview, he said that he reads the poetry of Mirza Ghalib, Anis, Josh, Allama Iqbal, Faiz Ahmed Faiz and some other poets and is really impressed by their writings and he tries to follow them. Mohsin Naqvi was in the final year of his Masters when his first poetry book named “Band-e- Qaba” was published.
In a very short time, he became so famous on Radio, Television and newspaper. He became popular in the literature circle as well and on 13 April 1994 a biography of Mohsin Naqvi written by Zia Sajid “Kai Batain Zaroori Reh Gaein” was published.
Mohsin Naqvi also worked and supported the political party known as Pakistan People’s Party (PPP). After getting popular in the literature circle of Multan, he linked up with PPP. He fought for PPP, was beaten by the opponents and he was prisoned as well. He got the party ticket from Bhutto against Mufti Mehmood but elections were postponed.
A renowned singer Ghulam Ali sang his ghazal “Ye dil ye pagal dil mera” and made him famous all over the Pakistan. Mohsin Naqvi was awarded by the Pride of Performance award. He also wrote a song “Lehron Ki Trha Tuhjy Bikharny Nahi Dain Gy” for a film “Bazar-e-Husan” and he got National Film award for this song.
Mohsin Naqvi is also known as Poet of Ahly Bait (a.s). Some of his famous books are Rida-e-Khwab, Moj-e-Idraak, Furat-e-Fikar, Barg-e-Sehra, Reza-e-Harf, etc. Some famous poems by Mohsin Naqvi are “Jo Eid To Karty Hain Muharram Nahi Karty”, “Hum Ap K Seeny Py to Matam Nahi Krty”, “Mohsin Ye Maqbool Riwayat Hy Jahan Ma”, “Bahar Rut Ma Ujaar Rasty”, “Itni Mudat Baad Mily Ho” and many other poems.
As he was a poet of Ahly Bait (a.s) and he wrote and spoke against terrorists, he was murdered on 15 January 1996 on his residence in Lahore. His poetry is well accepted and is recited all over the world.
