Gulab jamun is a desert, a sweet dish that is very popular in sub continent. The word Gulab jamun is the combination of two words Gulab (rose) a flower and jamun (jambul) name of a fruit. People in the countries like India, Pakistan, Nepal, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh are very fond of this dish. This same dish is known by the different names in the different countries like in Nepal it is known as Lalmohan, which could be served with or without yogurt. People of India call it Khoya as well. This desert is served on the different occasion in sub continent like in Muslims people serve it on events like Eid ul Fitar, Eid ul Adha, Shab e Barat, Eid Milad u Nabi etc. Hindus serve this dish on their special evetns like Holi, Dewali etc. this desert is also very famous in the events like engagements, weddings, birthdays and other domestic events.
Gulab Jamun as it is a sweet dish is sweet in the taste but many people make it with the different recipes and with the different shapes and sizes but the basic ingredients remain same. Basic shape of Gulab jamun is round like a small ball and of dark or light brown color. Gulab jamun gets its brownish color from the sugar content that is mixed in the milk powder or khoya used in its making. Another type of Gulab Jamun is called Kala Jamun because of its dark brown color that seems like black. In this type, sugar is added in the batter and after frying, it is dipped into the dark sugar caramel that gives it dark almost black color.
Making of Gulab Jamun is not that complicated and not too much of ingredients are required. Basically two steps will have to follow to make it, in one step dough for Gulab Jamun would be prepared and in other step sweet syrup would be arranged. For dough making milk powder, eggs, oil, white flour, semolina (suji), baking powder and oil for deep frying would be required. Moreover, to make syrup sugar and same amount or water, green cardamom, and few drops of Kewra essence would be required. Syrup would be prepared by dissolving the sugar into the water and put the green cardamom seeds in it and cook it until it starts boiling, and then remove it from the heat. For dough mix the entire ingredients together well in a solid form and then make small balls of it and deep fry it until it gives the brown color. And in the last step dip all the fried balls in the syrup and its ready to serve.
