In 1980’s, Nawaz Sharif was promoted by the Zia-ul-Haq as he was his right hand. During this time period Itefaq Steel Mills saw a high rise that was previously gone astray into the hands of the government of the Bhutto. In August 1988 after the death of General Zai-ul-haq his political party Pakistan Muslim League (Pagara group) divided into two parties as Fida group and Junejo group. Fida Group included loyal people of Zia and was led by the Nawaz Sharif. Later, Fida Group became to know as PML and Junejo Group as JIP. In his second term, one of his achievements was the successful atomic tests that were carried out on 28 May 1998. Another developmental project of his times that goes in his credit was building the largest super highway that is known as motor way.
Nawaz Sharif has some issue with the judiciary in his second term. Nawaz Sharif forcefully fired the General Jahager Karamat on October 1998. He replaced him with General Pervez Musharaf who then was appointed as a new Chief of Army Staff. The media, senior politicians and opposition intensively criticized this act of Nawaz Sharif. Apart from achievements, Nawaz Sharif made some decision that became the cause of his dropped popularity. As he announced emergency in Pakistan and undeclared the war fought between India and Pakistan on the northern fronts called Kargil. Kargil is one of the coldest and highest points of the world. Private Pakistani media started to criticize the plan intensively and General Pervez Musharaf put the whole matter in front of media and for this disadvantage held the prime minister responsible. In contrast, Nawaz Sharif put the blame on Musharaf saying that he did not have any knowledge about planned attacks and Musharaf did it alone. He also took control of stock markets that had destructive effects on the economy of Pakistan. Similarly, some other policies were made by him that were condemned by the people.
Nawaz Sharif considered Musharaf responsible for his fall and on 12 October 1999; he tried to replace Joint Chiefs and Chief of Army Staff General Pervez Musharaf by General Ziauddin Butt and appointed him. Musharaf tried to come back to Pakistan who at that time was in Sri Lanka but Nawaz Sharif ordered to arrest him. Later he ordered to seal the airport to prevent the landing of Musharaf’s flight. For the refueling purpose captain of the plane landed the plan on Nawabshah Airport. There at airport Musharaf contacted the senior Pakistan Army Generals who took over the country and expelled the Nawaz Sharif’s administration.
Nawaz Sharif then was sent to Adiala Jail and a court trail by a military judge then began. When King Fahad of Saudi Arab heard this news, he intervened and showed concern. Then an agreement was made in which it was mention that Mr. Nawaz Sharif will not come back to Pakistan for the next ten years and will not take part in political activities of Pakistan for the twenty-one years. He was then placed to exile through Saudi Arabian Airlines.
Nawaz Sharif and his brother Shahbaz shrif declared to come back to Pakistan when Supreme Court of Pakistan on 23 August 2007 ruled that Nawaz Sharif and his brother are allowed to come back. On 10 September 2007 Nawaz Sharif returned to Pakistan but within hours was deported to Saudi Arabia but on 25 November 2007 he successfully came back to Pakistan. Nawaz Sharif gave the call to boycott the elections 2008 as he said that polling would not be fair. Then he decided to take part in parliamentary election. PML N won 91 National Assembly seats, 189 provincial assembly seats and Punjab and thus PML N went successful in making government in Punjab, and Shahbaz Sharif brother of Nawaz Sharif became the Chief Minister of Punjab.
Now in the general election of 2013, Nawaz Sharif is contested and he won 2013 Elections with heavy mandate in all over Central Pakistan, he can independent for government in Federal. We wish Pakistan be prosperous.
