Quaid-e-Azam library is situated in a pleasant atmosphere of Jinnah garden also known as Bagh-e-Jinnah is a high profile research library of Pakistan. It is the library which caters the need of research scholars and post graduate students. The best feature of this university is high standard service, adequate stock of books and highly qualified staff. Every year a fresh and high quality book stock is added. The library has recently established an e-section providing thirty computers. These help readers to access to net browsing data base at local and international level on one desk.
The library building was constructed in the mid of 19thcentury. This library comprises of two halls, the Lawrence Hall and the Montgomery hall. Lawrence hall was built in 1861-62 with the contribution of European community of Punjab to commemorate Sir John Lawrence, the first lieutenant Governor of Punjab, viceroy and Governor General of India. The Montgomery hall was built in year 1886 with the contribution of the native chief of Punjab in honor of Sir Robert Montgomery. Both the halls are joined with the corridor. The building was mostly used as an assembly room for public meeting and musical performances. Both the halls were under the charge of municipal committee. This building was also known as old Gymkhana.
The Quaid-e-Azam library has collection of more than 110,100 books both in English and oriental languages i.e. Urdu, Arabic and Persian. Almost 3000 books are added every year. New books are displayed for month before shelving to their proper place. Books on literature, history, periodicals and literature for ladies and children have been acquired. Library is been divided into different sections dealing with English, Arabic and Urdu. Special attention is been made on acquiring comprehensive literature on Islam and the Muslim world.
Library Promotion Activities
The library possesses an excellent auditorium, which is frequently used for conferences, exhibition, seminars and workshops in order to improve professional knowledge.
Various Section of Library
- Reference Section
The reference section is situated on the eastern side. This section provides the research scholars, students and general public with the material like encyclopedia, directories, handbooks, maps indexes etc.
- Oriental Section
Oriental section is located on the top of the gallery of Jinnah hall. It contains books on Hadith and tafseer. Books on seerat of different languages like Arabic Urdu and Persian are also available.
- Ladies Section
Ladies section is been maintained separately. It contains book on health care, nutrition, cookery, Islamiat, education etc. A lady librarian is hired.
- Audio-Visual Aids Section
Another feature of this library is the audio visual section. The library has good collection of audio visual materials including tapes, audio tapes, projectors, films, etc. Regular exhibition based on literature and science projects are arranged.
