Dera Bugti is a district of Baluchistan, situated to the south west of Punjab Province. In Balochi, Urdu, Punjabi and many other languages, “dera” means abode. Majority of settlers are of Bugti tribe. This is how this place got its name as “Dera Bugti”. Presently, the district has three union councils: Dera Bugti, Sui and Phelwagh.
Dera Bugti is an old settlement with ancient history. Until July 1983, the area falls under Kohlu Agency. During the British rile, one of the last region came under their rule was Dera Bugti Agency. Much of the bloodshed has been witness but all battles were fight with great courage. After the independence Sibi district was authorized to handle the control till 1974. Again a switch of control was witness and finally in July 1983, it was detached and recognized as Dera Bugti Agency.
Dera Bugti is one of the most precious assets for Pakistan. It is equivalent to life blood to the economy. In 1963, while seeking for petroleum, researchers were able to locate one of the largest gas deposits. Only four gas fields are utilized till now for the supply across country wide. PPL is managing the Sui Gas Field, while OGDCL is handling Loti Gas filed, Pir Koh Gas Field and Ouch Gas field.
Dera Bugti is home of paleontology. Fossil of the largest mammal- Balunchilherium was discovered from here. It is stated the fossil dates back to 30 million years. There are not many notable places to visit expect the Sui Gas installation and fort of late Nawab Akbar Bugti. 99% of the population is Muslim and according to 2005 survey, 250,000 lives here.
Dera Bugti will always remain linchpin for Pakistan.
